Multifamily Buildings

The protocol for radon testing in multifamily dwellings differs from that of single family dwellings and typically involves a more thorough procedure. Multifamily buildings are defined as buildings with more than three attached dwellings.

A separate test must be done in each of the following:

  • Each dwelling in direct contact with the ground or crawlspace
  • every non-residential ground contact room that:
    • is or can be made occupied with little or no modification
    • has air communication with occupiable areas (e.g. stairwells)
  • every 2,000 ft for large or open areas
  • in the upper floors at least one test per floor
    • testing at least 10% of the dwellings per floor
    • staggering tests between floors
